Wonderful rule set that cleaned up minor issues from the previous edition. This is what rank and flank wargaming should always be. Simple intuitive ruleset, and the rules for multibasing units provides creative flair and allows those that truly enjoy the modeling aspect of the hobby to shine. Clean ruleset that favors strategy over powerbuilding lists (although there can be a little of that). Factions balanced to provide numerous competitive army compositions not relying on a few meta builds to be successful. - DreadArtemis

Simply brilliant. Kings of War is by far my favorite mass battle wargame. 3rd edition adds some welcome tweaks to keep things fresh and clean. Love it! - Lach

Similar to warhammer fantasy battle of old (with all the same armies) but much much quicker to play, this game is all about the movement phase, maneuvering to get the critical first charge and even more critical flanks. 3rd edition also beefs up the background fluff, presented in a beautifully put together book. - kenako

Still a great game. The Engaged versus old bounce back feels like it makes things more complex than needed but I know there are reasons for it. - EyeLost

Really great system. fast paced, easy to learn, acceptable from modelling perspective. Designed with tournaments in mind. Also very familiar to warhammer but less complicated (at the expense of some of the uniquness and flavour of armies). - VonBlask

Same comments from previous version but refined and clearer rules. Some edge cases in the rules that allows charges in impossible angles should be still revised, but overall probably the best rank-and-file fantasy wargaming rulebook that have ever existed. - TortugaDuende

Best balance of livability, flavor and mechanisms in a mass battle table top game that I've played. 80% of the enjoyment of old Warhammer Fantasy, in half the time, with 20% of the hassle. Mass rank and flank looks terrific, further improved by the diorama basing the system allows. Things look like what they do, no surprises. Good amount of special rules without surprises or 'gotcha' moments. Not the most thematic and there are so many armies there's a lot of 'sameness' to them. Still an excellent mix of all elements whilst remaining easy to learn and play. - Tinman6

Very enjoyable. More of a dicefest than I'm used to playing Oathmark, but a great game nonetheless, worth it's reputation. - TheByteknight

Thank Rank and File game I've been looking for. After playing other systems, this is it! I do miss no having representation in the stats of under manned units, but this game is one where decision making on the field of battle matters more than the list you build or what's in your deck of cards. As it was explained to me, the mechanics are simplified, in relation to other Table Top Miniature wargames, but it leads to a deeper experience. Like Go, for example, slimmer rules that lead to a deeper strategic and tactical experience. It's a bit more like setting the right deployment which is ideal, in particular since the movement is reasonably restricted; unlike some other games where you can stop turn around and head back full speed in the opposite direction, you need to pivot/turn at intervals, as a unit would in the battlefield. Makes for such a deeper experience and I LOVE THE DICE CHUCKING! When this is all combined with a group of incredibly balanced factions, this game's a winner for sure! Very happy I found this! Edit, selling my armies: Honestly, a truly fantastic rule set, company and cool miniatures. I just had too much on the go, so my love of 40K lore won out. If not for restrictions in life, I would have kept up with this. As far as rank and flank/fantasy style massed battle games go, this, in my books, is the best with Conquest coming in second. The other point of caution, perhaps, is that the model count is higher, which is great for the gameplay experience, however, can be tougher for others as the buy in cost for a full army is a little higher than other systems can be. ***UPDATE*** Ending up buying into Conquest anyhow. This was a fun game, Conquest is a big step forward IMO, particularly with the Alternating Activation. At least the way 40k does it, people are involved with strategems and rolling for saves. Good game, but a better rank and flank option exists IMO. - Prokop1

Since 2019 in its third edition, and with no very direct GW competition is sight, this game appears to have a healthy competitive scene, plenty of balanced yet distinctive factions, a pretty complete 32mm miniatures line and ample, regular support. The nerfing of ranged combat and flying between second and third edition clearly shows a company dedicated to continuing to ensure the balance of its game and fighting power creep instead of encouraging it (not that I had a competitor in mind who would do that...). In terms of gameplay, it very much aims to be a very simple, fast-playing game system. Notably, it keept the notorious I-Go-U-Go activation system, with one player moving, shooting and melee-ing all their units, followed by the other player. I-Go-U-Go certainly has its place in game design but at this point it requires some justification. It works but feels a bit dated as players sit on their hands half of the game. Even melee is one-sided (one side beating on the other which according to the rules is busy defending itself...). Again, this can be a valid game design choice, but in terms of feel it very much rubs me the wrong way. Enough grumping now... I particularly like the morale system in which units accumulate damage and the combined damage is used as modifier for morale tests (which can disorder the units or completely rout them). With no individual figure removal, units come and go as a block. Units can be bought in different sizes, increasing their size and staying power on the battle field... at an increased point cost. That tradeoff is certainly a space worth exploring and, thanks to fixed unit sizes, is still manageable with my proxied 15mms. - Order
